I used to think “healthy living” meant becoming one of those people who meal-preps on Sundays and genuinely enjoys kale chips. Spoiler, I am not that person. I am the person who once ate cereal for dinner three nights in a row and called it “whole grains.”

But over the years, mostly through doing everything wrong first I’ve figured out that balance isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about not feeling like garbage all the time. Here are ten things that actually moved the needle for me.

1. Eat Real Food, Mostly

Look, I’m not going to tell you to never eat processed food again. I had frozen pizza last week and I regret nothing. But the more I shifted toward food that actually rots if I leave it out too long, the better I felt. Vegetables, fruits, eggs, rice, chicken boring stuff, honestly, but it works.

I stopped counting calories because it made me miserable. Instead, I just ask: did I have something green today? Some protein? If yes, the chips I had with lunch don’t feel like a moral failure.

2. Move Your Body In Ways That Don’t Suck

I joined a gym once. Hated every second. Felt like everyone was watching me struggle with a dumbbell the size of a grapefruit. Cancelled after two months.

Then I started walking. Just… walking. Around the neighborhood, listening to podcasts, sometimes music, sometimes nothing. Twenty minutes. Sometimes forty if I was avoiding work. And weirdly, my back stopped hurting. I slept better. I didn’t lose 30 pounds or anything dramatic, but I felt human again.

You don’t need to become a CrossFit person. You just need to not sit in the same chair for 12 hours.

3. Sleep Is Non-Negotiable

For years I bragged about getting by on five hours. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” I’d say, like a complete idiot. Then I hit thirty and my body filed a formal complaint.

Now? I guard my sleep like a dragon guards gold. Seven to eight hours, phone across the room, no exceptions unless there’s a genuine emergency or a really good show. But even then, I pay for it the next day.

Your brain literally cleans itself while you sleep. That’s not hippie nonsense, that’s science. Skip it and you’re basically walking around with a dirty kitchen in your skull.

4. Drink Water, Seriously

This is the most boring advice on earth and also the most effective. I was chronically tired for months before a friend asked, “How much water do you drink?” I said coffee counts. She looked at me like I’d disappointed her.

Turns out I was just dehydrated. Constantly. Now I keep a big ugly water bottle on my desk and I chug it like I’m training for something. Energy improved. Headaches vanished. Skin looked less like I’d been living in a basement.

It’s almost annoying how well it works.

5. Go To The Doctor Before Something Forces You To

I skipped checkups for five years because I felt fine. Then I went in for something minor and found out my blood pressure was doing gymnastics. No symptoms. Nothing. Just quietly plotting against me.

Now I get the bloodwork, the dentist, the eye exam all of it. Not because I enjoy it. I hate the dentist. But I hate emergency rooms more. Think of it as an oil change. Expensive and annoying, but cheaper than a new engine.

6. Stress Will Kill You If You Let It

I used to wear stress like a badge. Busy meant important. Anxious meant I cared. Then my hair started falling out. Not kidding. Clumps in the shower. That’s when I realized my body doesn’t care about my work ethic.

I started small. Five minutes of just… sitting. Not meditating like a monk, just sitting on my porch with coffee and not looking at my phone. Some days I do breathing exercises. Other days I just complain to a friend for twenty minutes. Both count.

The stress doesn’t go away. But you can stop carrying all of it at once.

7. Alcohol: Know Your Relationship With It

I’m not here to preach sobriety. But I am here to say: pay attention to why you’re pouring that drink. Is it because you’re celebrating? Fine. Is it because you can’t face Tuesday without it? That’s worth looking at.

I cut back last year not quit, just cut back and my sleep transformed. My anxiety dropped by half. Turns out alcohol is really good at pretending it’s helping while it quietly makes everything worse.

Try a month without it. Or even two weeks. See what your baseline feels like without it. You might be surprised.

8. Your “Healthy Weight” Is Where You Stop Thinking About Your Weight

I’ve been the person who weighed myself daily. Up a pound? Bad day. Down two? I was a success. It was exhausting and honestly pathetic.

Now I focus on habits and let the number do whatever it wants. Some weeks I eat salads. Some weeks I eat tacos. The difference is I’m not using food as a math problem anymore. I just… live. My clothes fit. I have energy. That’s my metric now.

If your doctor is happy and you feel good, the scale can honestly go to hell.

9. Your Brain Needs Food Too

You can have the body of an Instagram model and the mental health of a dumpster fire. I’ve seen it. Nourishment isn’t just what’s on your plate.

Read books that have nothing to do with your job. Talk to a therapist if your thoughts are mean to you. Go outside and look at a tree for a while. I know that sounds stupid, but when was the last time you just looked at a tree?

Your mind is with you 24/7. Be nicer to it.

10. People Matter More Than Protocols

I spent one whole year being perfectly healthy perfect diet, perfect sleep, perfect workouts and I was lonely as hell. Turns out skipping dinner with friends to eat steamed broccoli alone is not actually living.

The longest-living people in the world don’t have secret supplements. They have communities. Friends. People who check on them. Loneliness will undo every healthy habit you have.

So text your people back. Have the dinner. Laugh loudly. That’s nourishment too.
